IEA to Organize Presidential Debate Ahead of Ghana’s 2024 Elections

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced plans to host a presidential debate in preparation for Ghana’s 2024 elections, aimed at providing voters with essential insights into the competing political parties.

In a statement, the IEA emphasized the significance of these debates in empowering voters to make informed decisions. Professor Alexander Bilson Darku, a senior fellow at the IEA, highlighted ongoing discussions with political parties to finalize the debate’s details.

“We are in preliminary talks with various political entities to schedule this pivotal debate before December 7,” Professor Darku stated in an interview with Citi News. “The IEA firmly believes in the people’s right to know the plans and policies of their potential leaders. We are drafting a timetable, which will soon be made public.”

This announcement comes amidst differing views between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the necessity of such debates.

“We are adhering to the Afrobarometer criteria to ensure transparency and fairness,” Professor Darku added. “These criteria set a threshold that will guide the selection of participating parties. We anticipate inviting four to five parties whose presidential and vice-presidential candidates meet these standards.”

The IEA’s initiative aims to strengthen the electoral process by offering voters a direct comparison of the platforms and visions of the competing candidates. The date and format of the debate will be disclosed in the coming weeks, with the IEA committed to organizing an event that benefits both the political entities involved and the nation.
