ECOWAS Begins Pre-election Assessment in Ghana

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a vital Pre-election Fact-finding Mission in Ghana, ahead of the country’s General Elections set for December 7, 2024. This mission is essential in ensuring Ghana’s readiness for the upcoming polls.
Leading the mission is Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. He is joined by key figures such as Ambassador Babatunde Olanrewaju Ajisomo, former ECOWAS Resident Representative to Liberia; Mrs. Davo Adoussou Laurentine, Rapporteur of Benin’s Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA); and Mrs. Marcella Ekundayo Samba-Sesay, Chairperson of Sierra Leone’s National Elections Watch (NEW).
A technical team from the ECOWAS Directorate of Political Affairs will support the mission, including Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, Head of Democracy and Good Governance; Mr. Serigne Mamadou Ka, acting Head of Electoral Assistance; and Mr. Constant Gnacadja, acting Head of Mediation and Coordination of Regional Political Affairs. Their expertise will be crucial in providing technical support, facilitating communication, and ensuring the mission runs smoothly.
Scheduled from July 21 to July 27, 2024, the delegation will meet with key stakeholders in Ghana’s electoral process. This includes government officials, the Electoral Commission of Ghana, members of the judiciary, parliamentarians, political party representatives, civil society organizations, security agencies, and international development partners.
After the visit, the mission will compile a detailed report, which will guide ECOWAS in supporting Ghana’s electoral activities for 2024 and serve as a benchmark for future missions. ECOWAS played a similar supportive role during Ghana’s 2020 elections, showcasing its commitment to promoting democracy and good governance in the region.
Stay tuned for updates on this crucial mission as ECOWAS works to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process in Ghana.
