Parliament Approves Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024

Ghana’s Parliament has approved the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024, marking a significant milestone in addressing historical gender imbalances and promoting equity in both public and private sectors. The bill, now transformed into the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Act, was officially read for the third time and passed.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, whose leadership has been pivotal in this legislative journey, announced the approval on Tuesday, stating, “The ‘ayes’ have it.” This marks the culmination of a significant legislative process, finalizing the bill’s passage into law.
While the bill is a landmark achievement, MP Haruna Iddrisu of Tamale South has previously expressed concerns regarding its focus. He pointed out that it addresses international issues rather than specific challenges faced by Ghana. Speaking at the 15th MTN Pulse Africa Transform Summit in Kumasi, Iddrisu emphasized the importance of women aspiring and managing their aspirations effectively.
The new law is expected to have far-reaching impacts on gender equity in Ghana, setting a framework for increased representation and opportunities for women across various sectors.
