Dr. George Akuffo Dampare Calls for Public Action Against Misinformation and Disinformation
, Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has called on the public to recognize their vital role in combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation, which he described as significant threats to national security and societal harmony.
Speaking at a summit organized by Ghana Report, Dr. Dampare stressed the urgent need for collective action from all stakeholders to tackle these modern challenges. He highlighted the rapid spread of false information through social media and the increasing sophistication of fake news tactics as critical issues that demand serious attention and unity.
“Misinformation and disinformation are not just issues of misinformation but grave threats to national security. We must approach them with the utmost seriousness and unity,” Dr. Dampare remarked, underscoring the severe consequences these threats pose.
Dr. Dampare expressed concern over public resistance to law enforcement actions against individuals spreading false information. “It’s disheartening when those who call for action against misinformation then oppose law enforcement efforts,” he stated, urging a unified stance against such threats.
He also emphasized the necessity for a change in mindset, advocating for compassion and a shift away from deriving joy from others’ misfortunes. Dr. Dampare called for a collective effort to foster a more humane society and stressed the importance of ethical responsibility in information sharing.
