John Mahama Talks About Plans To Create A New Region In The Upper East Region

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled plans to create a new region from the Upper East Region if elected. During a visit to the Bawku Naba’s palace, Mahama announced that a proposal has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament through Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku.
Mahama argued that the creation of a new region would address pressing issues such as the ongoing security crisis in the Bawku area and generate more job opportunities. He highlighted that the land size and population of the Bawku area are comparable to or exceed those of the North East Region, strengthening the case for a new region.
“The principal reason for which we create new regions and new districts is to bring government closer to the people,” Mahama stated. He emphasized that decentralizing governance would improve security, noting, “Bawku is a special security zone because of the issues that have been happening here. It would be a good proposal to have a region so that it can be a focus to make sure that we deal with the security issues as well as we can.”
Mahama also underscored the importance of meeting criteria such as population, land size, and economic viability in the proposal for a new region. He assured the Bawku Naba and constituents that this initiative would significantly enhance governance and security in the area, addressing both local needs and broader developmental goals.
