ECG Managing Director Announces Replacement of Obsolete Meters

Samuel Dubik Mahama, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has highlighted significant challenges the company faces due to outdated meters. In an interview with TV3, Mahama revealed that approximately one million meters within the ECG system have become obsolete and require urgent replacement.

“The current meters are obsolete,” Mahama stated, stressing the need for a comprehensive plan to upgrade these aging devices. He noted that the ECG is actively working on a strategy to replace the outdated meters, which have long outlived their intended lifespan.

Beyond meter replacement, Mahama also addressed the ongoing issue of power theft, which continues to pose a major hurdle for the company. Despite efforts to modernize the power distribution system, power theft remains a critical concern that undermines ECG’s operations.

“We are consciously moving our clients to a new system, but power theft is still a major issue,” Mahama explained. “We need to close gaps in the system.”

The ECG’s initiatives to replace obsolete meters and tackle power theft form part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of Ghana’s power distribution network.
