Thousands Join Three-Day Protest in Accra Against Arrests and Illegal Mining (Galamsey)

A three-day protest against the arrest of Democracy Hub members and the ongoing fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, has begun in Accra, with more than five thousand police officers deployed to maintain order. The heavy police presence can be seen throughout the city as the protest gains momentum.
Protest leaders expect at least three thousand citizens to join the demonstration, which started at Okponglo near the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. The march will pass through key locations, including the Kanda Highway, Ridge Hospital, and Parliament House, and conclude at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The protest, held under the slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” seeks not only the release of detained activists but also urgent action on the environmental damage caused by illegal mining. Organizers have planned a detailed schedule for the three-day protest, with activities including the submission of petitions to key government figures.
“On Day 1, we will submit a petition to the Attorney-General, calling for the release of our brothers and sisters who are being held in police custody,” said one of the organizers.
The second day will focus on a petition to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, urging stronger measures to end galamsey. On the final day, the group will present a petition to Parliament, calling for stricter legislation to eliminate illegal mining practices.
The protest will conclude with a vigil at Independence Square, where organizers hope to be joined by the released detainees. “We want to celebrate their sacrifices for a better Ghana,” the group shared in a statement.
This demonstration follows a recent protest against galamsey and government mismanagement, which ended in violence and the arrest of participants. Despite this, the activists remain determined. “This is not just our fight,” one leader said. “It is a fight for our future, our children, and our nation.”
