TikTok to shut down music streaming platform in November

TikTok has announced the end of its TikTok Music service in five countries: Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico: by the end of November. This strategic move, as reported by Music Business Worldwide, is designed to shift resources toward its ‘Add to Music App’ feature, which enables users to save tracks they discover on TikTok to playlists on other music streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon.
According to Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok, this feature has already facilitated “hundreds of millions of track saves” to playlists on these partner services. TikTok aims to strengthen its role in music discovery, helping drive traffic to third-party streaming platforms while benefiting artists, songwriters, and the music industry as a whole.
TikTok Music launched in Indonesia and Brazil last summer as a successor to ByteDance’s music app Resso. The app expanded to Australia, Singapore, and Mexico last year but faced licensing issues with Universal Music Group (UMG), which have since been resolved.
TikTok’s ‘Add to Music App‘ currently operates in over 180 countries, and the platform is reportedly in talks with additional music streaming services to expand partnerships. The platform’s influence in music trends is undeniable; TikTok recently revealed that over 27% of last year’s first gained popularity on TikTok before reaching the charts, underlining the app’s major role in driving music consumption globally.
