Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has dismissed rumors of a rivalry between himself and current captain Andre Ayew, attributing the speculation to manipulation by external forces.

Gyan addressed the issue during an Instagram Live session on Thursday, aiming to clarify their relationship and put an end to long-standing rumors.
“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me,” Gyan said. “But he has been brainwashed because it benefits people. That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.”
The alleged rift between the two football icons became a topic of debate in 2019, when Ayew succeeded Gyan as captain of the Black Stars. The decision, made just before the Africa Cup of Nations, sparked widespread speculation that tensions existed between the two players.
Gyan, who retired from international football in 2023, emphasized that the notion of a feud was perpetuated by individuals seeking to exploit their relationship. “People created this rivalry for their own agenda, not because there was an actual issue between us,” he added.
The former Sunderland and Al Ain striker, known for his record-breaking 51 international goals for Ghana, stressed the importance of unity within the national team. “What matters most is the success of the Black Stars. We need to come together, not divide ourselves,” Gyan said.
Gyan has previously spoken candidly about controversies in his career, including his infamous penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His latest remarks reinforce his focus on leaving a legacy of teamwork and solidarity rather than division.
As one of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers, Gyan’s statement underscores the need to move past fabricated conflicts and focus on fostering a united front for the Black Stars’ future success.
