Three Dead As Police Foil Attempt To Steal Gold From Newmont’s Mining Site
The Ghana Police Service has successfully restored peace in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region, after a group of individuals allegedly attempted to break into the Newmont mining site to steal gold on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
The incident escalated into a confrontation between the group and the police, leading to the unfortunate death of three individuals and injuries to four others.
In a statement released on Thursday, January 9, the police confirmed that calm had been restored in the area after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, engaged community leaders and the youth to de-escalate tensions.
“The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked on the phone with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth…to stabilize the situation, and there has been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community,” the statement read.
An investigative team has been dispatched to probe the incident thoroughly, while reinforcement has been sent to the community to ensure sustained peace and order.
The police also revealed that the three deceased individuals were Muslims, and steps are being taken to release their bodies to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic customs. Residents have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue.
