Michael Essien Explains Why He Turned Down Black Stars Assistant Coach Role

Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has finally opened up about his decision to decline the opportunity to become the assistant coach of the Black Stars. In a recent interview with Sporty FM, Essien revealed that he felt unprepared for the role despite being approached by Otto Addo, the former head coach, and Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku.

“I would not say I refused, but I was just not ready for that job,” Essien explained. “I was approached by Otto Addo and the president, but I felt I was not ready.”

This revelation has surprised many fans, given Essien’s legendary playing career with the Black Stars. The former Chelsea star was a key figure in Ghana’s midfield during the 2010 and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals. His decision to step away from the coaching role has sparked discussions about his future in football management.

Following Essien’s decision, the GFA appointed John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann as the new assistant coaches for the senior national team. However, Laumann’s tenure was short-lived, as he was replaced by Desmond Ofei after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

Despite not being part of the current coaching setup, Essien remains optimistic about the future of the Black Stars. Reflecting on his playing days, he expressed his belief that the team is on the path to success.

“It’s sad I couldn’t win any trophy during my playing days with the Black Stars, but I am convinced the team will win a trophy soon,” Essien said.
